Mount Avala Tour

Home > Tours from Belgrade > Mount Avala Tour

We will drive 11 miles south of the city to the 1,677ft high Mount Avala, where the ancient town of Zmov once stood, for a day of tranquility and lovely scenery.

At the peak of the mountain is a terrace and the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, built on the orders of the King with the eight provinces of Yugoslavia represented by massive statues of black marble guarding the monument.

Also nearby is a memorial to those executed by the Nazis during the occupation, and another to a group of Soviet soldiers who died in an accident whilst attending the 20th anniversary celebrations of the liberation of Yugoslavia by the Red Army from the Nazis.

Mount Avala is indeed a glorious setting for these memorials amidst a deciduous and evergreen forest with panoramic views of Belgrade, neighbouring villages and the surrounding countryside, and it is one of the city's favourite spots for picnics and hikes.

Perhaps when you visit there will be some progress on the reconstruction of the TV tower - the original was bombed during the NATO campaign of 1999, and this promises to be another well-loved landmark of the city when completed. Also visit Vinca, one of central Europe's best archaeological sites. In 1908 the remains of a 4,000-year-old village were discovered - dating from the Neolithic or stone age period - with traces of their cottages, and lots of quite sophisticated domestic artefacts such as jewellery, figurines and kitchen pottery, and farming implements and weapons, made of stone and bone. Many of these relics are displayed in the National Museum in Belgrade. Then we return to Belgrade.

We offer private tours to Mount Avala with private English speaking guide by private car, which include hotel pick up and drop off at chosen time.
